Sator Arepo — The Devil’s Square Mug

SATOR. AREPO. TENET. OPERA. ROTAS.

Five words. Twenty-five letters. A square that reads identically left to right, right to left, top to bottom, bottom to top. The earliest known occurrences were scratched into the walls of Pompeii — before Christianity had a foothold in the Roman world.

Nobody has satisfactorily explained it. “Arepo” isn’t Latin. The Pater Noster solution, popular since the 1920s, is likely modern retrofitting. What’s harder to dismiss is the consistency of its use: on rune-sticks in Norway, carved into a Danish church in limestone, recorded in Icelandic black books. Wherever it appeared, it appeared as protection — against fire, theft, madness, illness, and harm.

The 17th century Icelandic cleric Einarsson condemned it. That’s usually a good sign.
